Kanchenjunga North South Base Camp

Mount Kanchenjunga had five different summit ridges along with two different base camps on Nepal, Kanchenjunga North Base Camp and Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. There is one high pass connecting both base camps, i.e. Sele Le Pass. If you can manage one-month vacation then you can go for Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek where as if you are running out of time you can choose one base camp trekking.

Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek

This is the shortest possible trek on Kanchenjunga Region. One can start either from Taplejung or from Thorpu. Yamphuding is the biggest village on Kanchenjunga South. Mamangkhe is living museum for Limbu Culture that host Limbu Museum and Culture Center on village. Limbu Cultural Trail Trekking can be another short and beautiful trekking option on this region. Ramche is final settlement where one can found small stone huts that operate lodge on peak season time. Oktang Monastery can be trekked during Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. Don’t get confused about Yalung Base Camp it is another name for Kanchenjunga’s South Base Camp is local language.

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

Starting and ending on either Taplejung or Suketar, Kanchenjunga North Region is more wild and isolated in compare to South. Up to Ghunsa there are pretty good settlement of people. Tibetan Refugee settlement on Gyabla and Phale are like Mini Tibet. Ghunsa had small hydroelectricity project and big school there. Normally people spend one more night on Ghunsa for acclimatization. Trail to Kambachen and Lhonak are highly unstable as most of portions are prone to landslide. Big rocky boulders and wide field are highlight of Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. It takes couple of more days to trek North Kanchenjunga Base Camp in compare to Kanchenjunga South. In local language people call is Pangpema that is accompanied by two small stone teahouses that used to be temporary summer settlement for yaks and sheep shepherds.
